Slow computer? 7 reasons and when an upgrade is worth it

What is usually to blame, and when repair beats buying new

A computer that takes minutes to start, freezes on the internet or runs hot does not necessarily mean you need a new one. At our repair station in Paphos we see computers every day that, with the right diagnosis, become fast again. These are the 7 most common reasons.

1. An old hard drive (HDD)

The most common reason. Many computers, especially older laptops, have a mechanical hard drive. Today's Windows is very heavy for these drives. Replacing it with an SSD is usually the upgrade that makes the biggest difference: faster start-up, faster programs, quieter operation.

2. Not enough RAM

If you have many browser tabs, Office and Teams open at the same time, memory fills up and the computer starts using the drive as memory, which is much slower. In many computers memory can be increased, if the motherboard allows it.

3. Too many start-up programs

Over time, programs get installed that start automatically with Windows and run in the background. You can see them in Task Manager, on the Startup tab, and disable the ones you do not need.

4. Viruses, adware and unwanted software

Pop-up adverts, unknown browser extensions or a changed home page are signs of unwanted software. Beyond speed, this is a security issue for your passwords and data. It needs cleaning and a proper antivirus.

5. Dust and overheating

A fan that is always loud is a warning. Dust blocks the cooling and the processor slows itself down to avoid overheating. Especially with the summer heat in Cyprus, an internal clean and fresh thermal paste make a big difference.

6. A full drive and outdated Windows

When the drive is almost full, Windows has no room for updates and temporary files. Keep free space, delete what you do not need and keep the system updated. Sometimes a clean reinstall of Windows is the fastest fix, after we back up your files.

7. A drive that is starting to fail

If the computer freezes for a few seconds, makes strange noises or shows disk error messages, the drive may be failing. This is not just about speed: back up your files immediately and have the drive checked before data is lost.

What you can do yourself today

  • Restart: many computers stay in sleep for weeks without ever shutting down.
  • Install pending Windows updates.
  • Uninstall programs you no longer use.
  • Close browser tabs you do not need and remove unknown extensions.
  • Check in Task Manager which program is using the processor, memory or disk at 100%.

If the computer is still slow after that, the problem is most likely hardware or something deeper, and a proper diagnosis is worth it.

Upgrade or new computer?

An upgrade is usually worth it when:

  • the processor is decent and the problem is the drive or memory,
  • the laptop is in good condition (screen, keyboard, battery),
  • you want to keep your programs and settings.

A new computer usually makes more sense when the processor is too old for current Windows, when the repair cost approaches the computer's value, or when your needs have changed. After the diagnosis we tell you honestly which option is worth it.
